OED (concise) defines ‘letter’ n. as ‘a character representing one or more of the sounds used in speech; any of the symbols of an alphabet; a written, typed or printed communication, sent by post or messenger; the precise terms of a statement or requirement; (as letters) literature’; (as letters) erudition; a style of typeface.
It gives ‘letter’ v. as meaning ‘inscribe or provide with letters; be awarded a letter as a mark of proficiency [..]. ‘Letter’ is a letter of the alphabet; ‘letters’ means ‘epistle, literature, culture’. ‘Lettering’ is an undefined derivative.
Hmmm…so it’ll be up to me to define it, along with this blog’s subjects and styles.
Leaving that for the next post, will publish this one now, to get in just under the wire of new year’s day somewhere in the world (rapidly approaching the international deadline from the east) to start another postaday blog for reasons given in my other new blog (link will be posted shortly).
Suffice it to say this blog will be about letters of all sort in all sorts of arrangements…
